Today I was part
of a team who worked with another local Primary School and a Intermediate/High
School Head of English. Our focus was to look into our literacy
programmes and see what we may need to develop in order to ensure students
start intermediate and high school with the necessary skills to be able to
achieve. The following key ideas were discussed:
Key things kids need to arrive at high school with for
success:
- Kids
are aware of their own learning. What can they do well?, what are
they working on?
What do they
need to build on their success?
- Kids
need to be independent - know that if they need help, they ask for it.
- The
students need to be confident to know what type of writing best fits the
task. (Not genre)
- Students
develop the skill in Year 9 to be able to identify and pull apart the
structure of authors work.
- It’s
important to keep the joy, creativeness, and love of writing alive.
Give kids
lots of opportunities to write a range of things
Don’t over
analyse every piece of writing
Kids need to have good key competencies - have all their
tools ready, be focused, need to start learning straight away otherwise if
they aren’t ready, it will have an impact on accelerated learning.

Write the world website - 100 word limit, cool ideas that
are for creative writing but are academically challenging.
Using art as a discussion piece to pull apart the meaning
